Superior Employee Spotlight: Binita Pokharel
Superior Construction Celebrates International Women In Engineering Day
In honor of International Women in Engineering Day, we want to introduce you to Civil Engineer Binita Pokharel, who continues to impress us with her professional skills and ability to break down barriers in our field.
How long have you been at Superior Construction, and what was your job title when you began? What is your current job title?
It’s been five years since I entered the construction industry. I graduated from the Institute of Engineering in Pulchowk, Nepal, in 2017 and began working in construction around the start of 2018.
I joined Superior in February 2021 (during the COVID-19 pandemic) as a project controls engineer. I gradually transitioned to the operations team, starting with pile-driving operations. Now, I serve as the drone pilot for our weekly progress videos and manage four major subcontractors with our erosion control crew as an assistant project manager.
What made you want to pursue a career in engineering? Where did you receive your degree?
My father introduced me to construction when I was about 13 years old. He had significant knowledge of building materials, and being close to him, I would often assist him with tasks ranging from holding up the torch to delivering cement materials for repairs. He encouraged me to pursue engineering when I was considering my career path.
I obtained my bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 2017 from the Institute of Engineering, Pulchowk, Nepal. In 2020, I completed my Master of Science in civil engineering from Purdue University, West Lafayette.
What project are you currently assigned to, and what is your role in that project?
I am heavily involved in the North Split Project, which recently achieved substantial completion. It’s an accomplishment I’m particularly proud of as it’s the largest transportation project in Superior’s history. Our team is now working diligently to complete sidewalks, landscapes and other aesthetic enhancements to elevate the beauty of the city of Indianapolis.
Is the construction industry typically inclusive, or have you found it can be difficult for women and other minorities to advance to key leadership roles?
Like many others, the construction industry has traditionally been male-dominated and faced challenges in promoting diversity and inclusivity. Women and other minorities have encountered barriers to advancing into key leadership roles.
However, there is a growing recognition of the value of diversity in the industry, and many construction companies and organizations have established initiatives to promote inclusivity and increase the representation of women and minorities in leadership positions through mentorship programs, leadership development initiatives, and networking opportunities. One such initiative is Superior’s Women in Construction program, of which I’m proud to be a member.
What is your favorite part about working for Superior Construction?
Working for Superior Construction has been a fantastic experience. I have been entrusted with significant responsibilities and provided the necessary tools to accomplish them, individually and as part of a team. Superior’s core values of Safety and Empowerment also align with my personal beliefs.
What advice do you have for women interested in working in construction?
My advice to women interested in pursuing a career in construction, particularly in STEM fields, would be to have confidence in your abilities and believe that you have every right to pursue a career in STEM. Stay resilient, remain focused on your goals, and challenge biases by demonstrating your abilities and accomplishments.
